Sindhupalchok: Ward chairperson arrested from gambling den

A recently elected ward chairperson has been detained from a gambling den in Balephi Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchok district on Monday night.

Chitra Bahadur Tamang, the chairperson of Balephi-6, was detained from local Sindhu Cafe in Andheri by the Araniko Highway, according to police. Acting on a tip-off, a team was deployed there from the District Police Office, informs SP Mohan Pokharel.

Meanwhile, preliminary police investigation revealed that he was possessing the amount to be distributed to elderly citizens and widows as a social security fund.

During the inquiry, Tamang had introduced himself as Bijaya Tamang.

Police say 16 persons arrested will be charged for gambling offences.

Police had seized Rs 118,000 from the cafe.

Tamang is an influential district level leader of the CPN-Maoist Centre and the party says it has also launched an investigation.
