Sindhupalchok: Army-built temporary shelters for earthquake survivors not in use

Kathmandu, September 23

Temporary shelters in Sindupalchok built by Nepal Army after the 2015 earthquake has been left to ruin for a long time. Shelters built in Thakni, Haibung and Bhote Chaur of Melamchi Municipality have been left uninhabited for a while now.

Sub-engineer of the project, Dhanijhar Chaudhary, says that the shelters built for elders and differently-abled during post-earthquake are not used anymore as they are quite far away from the village and are not accessible by roads. People for whom the shelters were built are still living in their temporary residences in the village, he informs.

As the shelters are not used by the villagers, they are now being used by masons who have come to the district to build houses. One of the halls is being used by Sindhu Shivapuri User Committee, informs Bhotechaur ward member Mina Prasad Khatiwada. Nepal Army had built the buildings in 2016.

According to sub-engineer Chaudhary, the shelters have solar lights, water taps, and a stove. Local youth groups have started an awareness campaign to make sure these buildings are used.
