Sindhupalchok: 70-year-old former ward chair accused of raping, impregnating girl

Sindhupalchok, January 2

A 70-year-old man in Jugal Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchok district has been accused of raping and impregnating an unmarried girl in his neighbourhood.

Suka Bahadur Tamang is also a former chairman of his ward.

The incident occurred in May last year, but it came to light now after it was found that the girl was pregnant. Preliminary investigations have found that the suspect had held the victim at gunpoint to force her for the intercourse.

The victim had hidden the incident from everyone, but her pregnancy was revealed around two months ago during a checkup at a Kathmandu-based hospital.

Following the revelation, the accused perpetrator forced the victim to abort the foetus. But, the health facility refused to do so citing the pregnancy already cross the ceiling upto which abortion can be carried out legally.

Then, the victim tried to file a complaint against the septuagenarian. But, police did not register the complaint citing she crossed the deadline of 35 days for the complaint. Now, she has filed a case at the District Court demanding the accused accept her as a wife and take care of the child.
