Kathmandu, October 1

The government has promoted Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi to the position of chief secretary.

Approving the resignation submitted by incumbent Lok Darshan Regmi, the government also appointed Bairagi as the chief secretary. This is the first time that an employee of the foreign service (career diplomat) has been appointed to the top bureaucratic position of the government.

A cabinet meeting held on Thursday morning made the decision, informs a minister.

Regmi was due to retire after around two weeks.

Khatiwada and Regmi nominated as ambassadors

Meanwhile, the government also recommended former finance minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada for the position of Nepal’s ambassador to the United States.

Soon after he resigned from the ministerial position, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on September 15 has appointed him as his senior economic advisor with ministerial benefits. Apparently, he was given the position of the de facto finance minister with Oli keeping the ministerial portfolio with himself formally.

However, just after two weeks, he was nominated for the ambassadorship.

Likewise, Regmi, who resigned as the chief secretary today has been nominated for Nepal’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.
