Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Rahbar Ansari has drawn the government’s serious attention to an ongoing protest by postgraduate (PG) students at National Medical College in Birgunj.
Speaking at Friday’s House of Representatives meeting, Ansari, a Birgunj resident, said PG students have been protesting for the past 10 days and claimed they have been barred from vacating their hostel, from protesting, and even from entering through the college gate.
According to him, the college administration tried to restrict the students after they raised their voices against irregularities taking place at the medical college.
Ansari also alleged that National Medical College had obtained around 25 PG seats by listing “fake faculty members,” meaning professors who are not actually working there. He further claimed that during an inspection by the Medical Education Commission, the college management had dressed up security guards as fake patients and placed them in the emergency hall.
“At that medical college, around 25 PG seats have been obtained by showing fake professors, faculty members who don’t actually work there,” Ansari said. “When the Medical Education Commission went for inspection, the college management forced the guards there to pose as patients in the emergency hall and act as though they were receiving IV fluids.”
Drawing the government’s attention to this, he said, “The state cannot allow colleges running such a racket in the name of fake patients, fake teachers and fake inspections to leave the future of its students in uncertainty.”
Ansari also claimed such activities had been going on for a long time, and alleged that pressure and influence on state bodies was the reason action had not been taken against the college concerned.
He made clear that his remarks were not an accusation against any single institution, but a call to end the broader malpractice visible in medical education.
He further alleged that when students raised these issues and began protesting 10 days ago, the college administration forced them to vacate the hostel and barred them from entering through the gate.
Noting that roughly half of the protesting students are currently in Kathmandu, Ansari urged the government to pay attention and resolve the matter by meeting the protesting students’ demands.
