Ruling, Madheshi parties file amendment to amendment bill

Kathmandu, April 30

Lawmakers of ruling, as well as Madheshi parties on Saturday night, jointly filed an amendment to the constitution amendment bill registered by the government in House.

Tek Bahadur Basnet of CPN-Maoist Centre, Chinkaji Shrestha of Nepali Congress and Kunti Kumari Shahi of Rastriya Prajatantra Party on behalf of the ruling parties and Laxman Lal Karna and Jogilal Raya from Rastriya Janata Party Nepal on behalf of the Madheshi Morcha filed the amendment proposal to effect changes as agreed between the two sides last week.

The parties have sought to deprive the provincial assembly of its veto in deciding boundary of the province.

Now, the provincial assemblies can only provide their opinions about their boundaries and the federal legislative can make decisions without their consent as well.

Earlier, in the amendment bill, the government had proposed that the concerned province should consent to the change.

The constitution currently has a provision that not only the concerned province, but the majority of the provinces should consent to the changes. The Madheshi Morcha had objected to the rule.

Meanwhile, the joint proposal also demanded that any language other than Nepali could be the official language upon a recommendation from the Language Commission.
