The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is set to launch a local election-focused campaign from October 6, with party leaders visiting every local unit across the country. The campaign will begin after the ongoing session of the Federal Parliament concludes. Teams comprising members of the House of Representatives and central party members will visit local units as part of the campaign.
According to RSP Co-General Secretary Nisha Dangi, the party intends not only to listen to citizens but also to communicate its own plans and views. “We are coming to your doorstep this time not only to listen to you but also to share and explain some of our views. All central members and lawmakers will be coming to your local unit,” she said in a video message.
Two objectives of the local-level campaign
According to Dangi, the campaign has two main objectives. First, the party will explain the functioning of local governments and its process for selecting candidates for the upcoming election. Second, it will inform citizens about the initiatives taken through Parliament and the government during the six months since the current government was formed.
As local governments are the institutions most closely connected to citizens’ daily lives and development, the party said it aims to explain the democratic process for selecting local leaders. Dangi said another key objective was to explain how the RSP plans to promote capable, honest and willing leaders for the local-level elections scheduled for February.
Under its previously announced candidate-selection framework, the RSP has said candidates will be selected through a Candidate Club, Leadership Academy and a fully democratic selection process.
Party to publicise government’s work
The RSP said the current government is nearing six months in office and that the campaign will provide detailed and transparent information on policy initiatives taken by Parliament and the government, the status of implementing promises made to citizens and the party’s plans for the coming days.
“Our lawmakers and central members will visit all 753 local units in 77 districts from October 6 as part of the campaign,” Dangi said. “This campaign is not merely preparation for the election. It is also an important democratic exercise to make local governments more accountable and establish the right leadership with citizens’ participation.”
