The Rastriya Janata Party Nepal has authorised its six-member presidium to decide whether to take part in the third phase of local level elections in Province 2 on September 18 as well as provincial and federal parliamentary elections on November 26.

A meeting of the party’s office bearers also authorised the presidium that comprises leaders Mahantha Thakur, Rajendra Mahato, Mahendra Raya Yadav, Sharad Singh Bhandari, Anil Kumar Jha and Raj Kishor Yadav to decide what will be used as an election symbol if they decide to contest polls.

The RJPN had demanded that the Election Commission give it umbrella as the symbol, but the constitutional body denied that claiming the party registered after the announcement of poll dates cannot get the new symbol. It has asked the RJPN to choose one among six symbols of the parties, which merged to form the RJPN.

Most speakers of the two-day meeting had advised that the party should contest the elections.

Earlier, the party had boycotted the first and second phases of local level elections demanding the constitution amendment. The amendment bill, however, was recently rejected by Parliament.
