Ready to discuss other demands of Dr KC, but not medical education bill: Pokharel

Kathmandu, January 28

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel says the government is ready to discuss other demands raised by medical education reform activist, Dr Govinda KC.

He, however, claims there is nothing to discuss anything about the National Medical Education Bill further.

The House of Representatives had endorsed the bill amid a strong protest from the main opposition Nepali Congress last week. Dr KC has been staging a fast-unto-death against that.

After tabling the bill in the National Assembly despite the protest of the opposition party this afternoon, Pokharel told journalists that the senior orthopaedic surgeon should not think that he could affect the parliamentary practice.

“Once we clarified that the bill process moves forward as per the parliamentary rule during his previous hunger strike,” he said, “Dr KC should not try influencing the House.”

While there were criticisms from various corners that the government did not take initiatives for a conversation with Dr KC, the Minister was of the view that enough talks were already held with the fasting doctor.
