Rautahat, September 1

The Province 2 Police Office has suspended three staffers of Garuda Area Police Office in Rautahat after a preliminary investigation found that they were involved in inflicting torture on a man in custody.

Earlier last week,  19-year-old Bijaya Mahara, who was kept in custody on the charge of a murder, had reportedly fallen sick in the custody.  He had died in the course of treatment at a Birgunj-based hospital. His family have been claiming police torture resulted in the death.

Following the accusation, the Ministry of Home Affairs had formed a committee to probe the case. The team in its preliminary investigation found Navin Kumar Singh, and head constables Munna Kumar Singh and Phiroj Miya tortured him.

The Area Police Office Chief DSP Gyan Kumar Mahato has already been transferred to the Provincial Police Office for investigation.

Province 2 Police Chief DIG Dhiraj Pratap Singh says further investigation is underway.
