Rabindra Misha, Ujwal Thapa to share equal status in unified party

L-R: Rabindra Mishra and Ujwal Thapa

Kathmandu, July 26

Both Rabindra Mishra of Sajha Party and Ujwal Thapa of Bibeksheel Nepali Party will share an equal status and position as the two parties will get united today.

They will be given equal rights and responsibilities, leaders involved in unification talks say. However discussions are still underway to find an appropriate title for their position.

Currently, Mishra is the coordinator in the party that he established some months ago where Thapa is the chairperson of his party.

The two sides have already agreed to form a 51-member central committee comprising 17 members from each of the parties and 17 others to be appointed later. The current structure will continue till the unified party will hold a general convention.

Meanwhile, the parties have decided to name the unified party Bibeksheel Sajha Party and use the scale/balance (taraju) as the election symbol.

The two parties are organising a press meet in Kathmandu this afternoon to announce the unification.

The two parties had tried unification before the first phase of local level elections in May as well. However, the attempt had failed after the parties had differences over who–either Rabindra Misha of Sajha or Ujwal Thapa of Bibeksheel–should lead the party.

Both the parties had received considerable votes in the first phase of local level elections in Kathmandu Valley. Their candidates, however, could not fare well in the second phase of polls. Now, the unified party will come up with a strong strategy to improve its performance in local level elections in Province 2 scheduled for September 18, the sources say.
