Punarbas border dispute: Lawmakers want govt take up the issue with Modi

File: A National Assembly meeting

Kathmandu, May 7

Lawmakers have demanded that the Nepal government discuss with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi how the two countries can resolve existing border disputes including that of Punarbas region in western Nepal as he is planning to make a state visit to Nepal this weekend.

Their demand follows an argument between security personnel of Nepal and India over their jurisdiction in Punarbas few days back. The dispute had surfaced after Indian security personnel tried to obstruct Nepalis from installing a barbed wire fence on the border so as to stop wild animals from Dudhwa National Park.

Speaking at the National Assembly meeting today, lawmakers including Hariram Chaudhary, Indu Kadariya and Anita Devkota demanded that the government talk with the Indian delegation issues about border encroachment and mistreatment of Indian security personnel.

Earlier, the Province 7 government had requested the federal government of Nepal to take diplomatic initiatives to resolve all border disputes with India.
