Police detain eight foreigners working for Melamchi Drinking Water Project

Kathmandu, December 17

Eight foreigners working at the Melamchi Drinking Water project have been detained by police. They were reported missing from the site office.

Police officials say the foreign workers were held after it was reported they were leaving the country for Christmas.

According to DSP Dan Bahadur Malla, they were found at a restaurant in Thamel after which the police handed them over to Ministry of Drinking Water.

“The ministry told us that they could be somewhere around Thamel so we sent a few of our men to locate them,” shares Malla.

According to a source, the detained include Project Manager Cristiano Cruso and his other co-workers. Earlier this month, one of Cruso’s worker was stopped at Tribhuvan International Airport by the immigration as he was trying to leave.

During interrogation, he had informed that there were others who were also trying to leave Nepal.

“They had their tickets booked and passports ready. They were all set to leave Nepal. We couldn’t let them leave such irresponsibly which is why we asked the police to interne,” shares an official.

The ministry has confiscated their passports.
