In pictures: The day opposition parties showed their strength

Kathmandu, January 6

A large number of people turned up at the Capital-centric protest that nine opposition parties, including the main opposition CPN-UML, organised on Friday. The main opposition announced earlier that it will rally one lakh people on Kathmandu’s arteries. The show of strength has become a prestige issue for opposition parties, especially the UML, in view of upcoming elections. UML leaders feel their tough stance against Madheshi Morcha and the blockade has increased the party’s popular in Kathmandu.

Anarchy on the road? Show of strength? A departure from the past? Opposition parties have chosen to show their strength by marching along Kathmandu’s arteries, a move that will surely throw life out of gear. Not that alone, they have decided to organise their mass gathering in the middle of a major road. Will this move win hearts and minds? Only upcoming elections will tell.

Government employees are also taking part in this protest. This is against the professional code and the law, but who is there to enforce them anyway?
