Kathmandu, March 7
The Supreme Court has paved the way for visually impaired and people with physical disabilities to go on mountaineering expeditions.
A constitutional bench of Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli, Justices Dipak Raj Joshi, Om Prakash Mishra, Cholendra Shumsher JBR and Dipak Kumar Karki scrapped the rule that restricts people with physical disabilities from climbing mountains, thereby paving the way for differently-abled people who wish to go on mountaineering expeditions.
Earlier, the court had issued an interim order to prevent the visually impaired and people with physical disabilities from climbing the mountains. Mountaineering Regulations, 2059 has imposed a ban on visually impaired and people with physical disabilities to go on mountaineering expeditions.
However, advocate Madhav Chaulagain had filed a writ petition at the SC against the provision arguing that the regulation was against the right to equality enshrined in the Constitution of Nepal.
