Pashupati Shamsher Rana wants ‘some space for traditional institutions’

RPP-Democratic Pashupati Shamsher Rana speaks with journalists in Biratnagar of Morang, on Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Biratnagar, September  14

Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Democratic Chairman Pashupati Shamsher Rana says his party wants to give some space to “traditional institutions” as well in the national political system.

Speaking with journalists in Biratnagar today, Rana hinted that his party still supported the agenda of monarchy and Hindu state, though he refused to clarify his statement.

Rana’s party is a member of the current ruling coalition and it has three ministers in the government which is working to institutionalise republicanism and secularism.

But, he told journalists today, “Our party is proud of our conduct, culture and history. The Shah dynasty has unified this country. Therefore we think that such traditional institutions should also get some space.”

As journalists asked if he was advocating for the reinstatement of monarchy, Rana said, “Our view is that the traditional institutions should get some space, nothing more than that, neither less than that.”

“If we fail to carry our tradition, history and anything from the past, where shall we go? Our origin has some context and we should remember that while moving ahead.”

“We have failed to think properly while introducing secularism,” he said.
