Parties discussing three names to lead TRC

Kathmandu, August 20

Major political parties–the ruling Nepal Communist Party and the main opposition Nepali Congress–are trying to make a consensus on who will lead two transitional justice mechanisms before Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will leave for Singapore on a medical trip this Thursday.

Sources close to the top leaders of the parties inform that they have been discussing three names to lead the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The names are Surya Dhungel, Govinda Bandi and Raman Kumar Shrestha.

The ruling party has proposed that Bandi or Shrestha be made the chief of the commission whereas the main opposition party is in favour of Dhungel. Bandi is a renowned human rights lawyer, and the section of the NCP representing the erstwhile UML proposed his name. The other side of the party, those representing the erstwhile Maoist Centre, also supported the proposal. But, the main opposition party insisted on Dhungel’s name. Dhungel was an advisor to former President Ram Baran Yadav.

As the parties could not choose between Bandi and Dhungel, some NCP leaders including the party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal suggested the name of Shrestha, a former attorney general.
