Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee fails to decide Joshee’s fate yet again

Deepak Raj Joshee attends a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee, on Thursday, July 26, 2018.

Kathmandu, July 30

The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee did not take any decision on whether to endorse Acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee’s name for the vacant position of Chief Justice on Monday as well.

The Committee had conducted a hearing with Joshee on Thursday. Then it had called a meeting to make the decision on Friday, which was later postponed till Sunday, and ultimately till today.

The Committee consisting of members from both House of Representatives and National Assembly convened the meeting today, but it ended without any decision.

Of late, Joshee has been dragged into a controversy as his academic certificates mentioned apparently suspicious information. In addition, he could not satisfy lawmakers about his plans to reform the judiciary during the hearing held on Thursday.

Therefore, it was reported that the ruling Nepal Communist Party has directed its lawmakers represented in the Committee to vote against Joshee’s nomination for the top judicial post.

Two third members of the Committee can reject nominations for constitutional bodies.

Nine of 15 members of the Committee belong to the NCP. Besides, one lawmaker representing the ruling coalition partner Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal is also likely to support the party in the decision. Therefore, the party can reject any name if it really wishes so.
