Kathmandu, May 15

A committee in the House of Representatives of Federal Parliament on Wednesday directed the government to resume halted works of Melamchi Water Supply Project immediately so that the ambitious project would deliver results as soon as possible.

A meeting of the Development and Technology Committee issued the directive in the name of Ministry of Water Supply.

In response, Minister for Water Supply, Bina Magar, assured that she would discuss the issue in the Cabinet and act accordingly. She said the government was committed to avoid any crisis of safe drinking water.

After the Italian contractor CMC left the project halfway citing the government failed to pay it on time in December 2018, the project has been pushed into limbo.

Meanwhile, the meeting also directed the government to formulate a National Drinking Water and Sanitation Policy and an act to implement the policy, according to the committee’s chairperson Kalyani Khadka.
