Only 42 of 59 National Assembly members will be elected through single transferable voting

Kathmandu, December 29

While the single transferable voting system will be used to elect the National Assembly as per the ordinance enacted today, the system will be restricted to the election of 42 members only.

Each province will elect three women and three others through the system whereas one Dalit and one Janajati or one person with disability will be elected through majority voting because each province has to elect only one person in each of these two categories.

In this way, each province will elect eight members of the upper House. Total 56 members will be elected through elections. The President will appoint three other members as per recommendation from the Cabinet.

Provincial assembly members and chiefs and deputy chiefs of local governments will cast ballots during the elections.
