Kathmandu, June 25

As the ruling Nepal Communist Party begins its key standing committee meeting, the two chairmen of the party have been seen heading towards a new round of intra-party struggle.

Whereas KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal maintained closeness for many months after the party unification in 2018 in order to stop the faction led by senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal from garnering additional strength, of late, both the chairs seem dissatisfied with each other.

During the first session of the standing committee meeting yesterday, Dahal strongly criticised the weak performance of the government led by Prime Minister Oli whereas Oli appeared on the defensive. A leader who attended the meeting says, “Most of Oli’s defences were repeated from the past whereas Dahal’s speech was powerful.”

Dahal said Oli turned boastful after the former Maoist leader agreed to let him enjoy the premiership for the complete five-year term. “I left my stand hoping it would benefit the government and the party, but I think it was my mistake,” Dahal said referring to an agreement with Oli to divide the five-year term between the two equally, which was withdrawn later, “If I did any mistake, I should correct myself. If he did, he should correct.”

Oli, in response, accused opponents in the party of trying to defame the leadership on the basis of majority support. He said the government could not perform well due to non-cooperation from within the party.
