Kathmandu, August 7

The 11th general convention of the Nepal Students’ Union, which is affiliated to the Nepali Congress, started at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu, on Sunday.

The convention will elect a 151-member central working committee comprising one president, 13 vice-presidents, two general secretaries, 16 joint general secretaries and one treasurer.

The NSU convention is taking place after a hiatus of 10 long years. UP Lamichhane, NSU spokesperson, said they have banned entry of vehicles at the venue of the convention since Sunday morning.

The number of contestants is pretty huge, thanks to delays in holding the same. And these contestants represent different factions in the party, making it clear that addressing their aspirations will be a very difficult task.

From the Deuba camp, Jit Jung Basnet and Nain Singh Mahar are the main contenders for the post of NSU president. Ratna Karki, Saroj Thapa and Rajiv Dhungana are also eyeing the position.

From the Ram Chandra Poudel camp, Manoj Mani Acharya and Dipak Bhattarai are eyeing the top NSU post. Ananda Tripathi, Nil Kantha Rijal, Kundan Raj Kafle and Shuva Ram Basnet are also eyeing NSU presidency.
