NRNA election uncertain again with govt barring executive committee from work

Kathmandu, November 23

The election of the new executive committee of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), the umbrella organisation of the non-resident Nepalis residing across the globe, has been uncertain yet again as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has barred the existing executive committee from organising the election.

The organisation had scheduled its election in October, but the government had interfered and ordered the postponement of the elections reportedly after it received complaints of irregularities in the selection of convention delegates. Following that, the NRNA postponed the election and later decided to hold it by November 30.

But, the ministry wrote a letter to the NRNA last week again and told it to conduct the election through the patron committee led by former president Shesh Ghale. But, the current executive committee president Kumar Panta says he will not accept the directive and challenge it at the court, making the election procedure more uncertain.

The government has mandated the NRNA to complete the election procedure by December end.
