Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has levelled a serious allegation against international non-government organisations operating in Nepal.

Prachanda, speaking at a programme, accused INGOs of spending their budget merely by unveiling their reports at star hotels.

‘INGOs are focusing more on organising workshops and seminars in star hotels instead of working for poor people living in remote regions of Nepal’

Speaking at a function organised to mark the 37th Social Service Day in Kathmandu on Thursday, PM Prachanda accused INGOs of focusing more on organising workshops and seminars in star hotels instead of working for the poor people living in remote regions of Nepal.

These INGOs raise slogans on upliftment of the poor, only to use the poor for strategic purposes, he pointed.

It’s time to analyse whether an increasing number of INGOs are coming to Nepal for social service or for some other purposes

He said it’s time to analyse whether an increasing number of INGOs are coming to Nepal for social service or for some other purposes.

At the programme that Social Welfare Council had organised, Bishnu Prasad Lamsal, secretary at the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, also accused INGOs of spending budget in an opaque manner. Instead of catering to target groups, they are focusing more on conducting workshops and seminars, he alleged.

INGOs have spent billions of rupees without any visible outcomes. Social Welfare Council employees should investigate and find where all that money goes

INGOs have spent billions of rupees without any visible outcomes, he said, directing Social Welfare Council employees to investigate and find where all that money goes.

He then requested INGOs to spend part of their budget on visible areas like infrastructure development instead of focusing only on workshops and seminars.

Currently, there are 260 INGOs operating in Nepal. Some of them are spending money on their own instead of taking permission from the government.
