New law proposes sacking of civil servants involved in polygamy

Kathmandu, December 1

A new piece of legislation under discussion in Parliament proposes the sacking of civil servants found to be involved in polygamy.

In its civil service bill, under deliberation in Parliament’s State Affairs and Good Governance committee, the government has proposed that civil servants involved in polygamy be relieved of their job.

The committee has invited Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration Hridayesh Tripathi to discuss the provisions of the bill. The bill reflects the provisions of the newly enacted penal code which states that if a married person enters into matrimony again, the second marriage shall be considered void.

Various amendments filed in relation to the bill call on lawmakers to incorporate provisions in the bill that will relieve civil servants of the jobs if they are found to have been involved in corruption, obtained permanent residency abroad or lied about their age and qualification.
