Deputy Prime Minister and RPP-Nepal President Kamal Thapa has accused political parties of making a mockery of democracy by trying to run a tyrannical rule in the name of political consensus.

Parties with majority support in the Parliament should run government, while parties devoid of majority support should sit in the opposition, Thapa said in Biratnagar on Monday. In a democracy, parties having majority support run government, while others stay in the opposition, he said.

Thapa said: Going by agreements between political parties, it seems there will be no opposition left. This cannot be a beautiful aspect of democracy.

A government is supposed to function on the basis of certain processes, Thapa pointed. “These days, political parties reach deals on anything. This has made a mockery of democracy.”

In the name of understanding, political parties are trying to rule like tyrrants for the past few years, Thapa said.

Save in special circumstances, parties with majority support in the Parliament should run government, while others should sit in the opposition bench, he said. In the name of change in government, the Nepali Congresss, CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre are trying to rule, Thapa alleged.

Thapa indicated that it was but natural for the Nepali Congress to stay in the opposition bench.
