Nepal’s Home Ministry demands Rs 750 million for assisting victims of monsoon-induced disasters

Ministry-of-Home

Kathmandu, July 27

The Ministry of Home has demanded Rs 750 million from the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund for immediate rescue and distribution of relief to victims of monsoon-induced natural disasters.

The ministry made this demand during a meeting of the Natural Disaster Rescue Committee held in the wake of huge loss of life and property resulting from disasters, including landslides and flooding, at Singhadurbar on Wednesday morning.

Apart from demanding Rs 750 million for rescue and relief efforts, the meeting of the committee, which is under the ministry, also decided to shift the displaced people to integrated settlements or set up tents for them. Home Minister Bhim Rawal said he directed authorities to give priority to senior citizens, children and pregnant women during rescue and relief efforts.

Minister Rawal pledged to arrange more funds for the same if the need arises.

The meeting decided to take precautions in view of possibility of spread of diarrhoea and cholera in disaster-hit areas. It directed authorities to rush foodstuff and drinking water via road or air.

The committee also made a decision to keep medical teams on standby and asked security agencies to stay alert.

And it called victims, who have no access to relief and rescue, to call police. The ministry has appealed affected people to call Nepal Police hotline (100) for the same.
