Nepali Congress leaders agree to increase number of office bearers to 13

Kathmandu, December 21

After days of negotiations and bickering, leaders of Nepal’s main opposition party, the Nepali Congress, have finally agreed to increase the number of office bearers to 13.

The Nepali Congress until now has six office bearers who run the daily affairs of the party and have a big say in decisions taken by the leadership. The party, which until now had a president, a vice-president, two general secretaries, a joint general secretary, and a treasurer as its office bearers, will now have seven joint general secretaries, two vice-presidents, and two general secretaries.

Apart from the treasurer, all other officials will be elected by the general convention. A draft proposal to this effect will now be presented before the Central Working Committee and forwarded to the party’s general convention.

During the Maha Samiti meeting on Thursday, party chief Sher Bahadur Deuba had proposed that one person each be nominated to posts of vice president and general secretary. However, his proposal was rejected by senior leader Ramchandra Paudel and Krishna Sitaula.
