Kathmandu, February 7
The main opposition Nepali Congress has continued obstructing the House of Representatives meeting on Friday also, protesting the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority’s decision to indict the parliamentary party’s deputy leader Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar on a corruption case.
Gachhadar was one among 175 defendants indicted in a charge-sheet that the anti-corruption constitutional body registered at the Special Court on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the notorious Baluwatar land grab case.
Speaking at the House meeting today, the party’s lawmaker Min Bahadur Bishwakarma reiterated that the decision was politically biased as the commission did not indict any leaders of the ruling party who were connected with the case. He said the decision to accuse Gachhadar was influenced by political prejudice.
Following Bishwakarma’s statement, the lawmakers of the party stood up from their seats, forcing the speaker to halt the meeting. Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota told the lawmakers that the case was already forwarded to the court, hence the legislative body could not do anything about it. He also asked the opposition party to cooperate in running the House smoothly as many bills were pending.
However, the lawmakers did not heed him, and Sapkota adjourned the meeting.
The party’s lawmakers had obstructed the meeting on Thursday also. A meeting of the parliamentary party held on Friday morning had decided to continue the obstruction.
