Kathmandu, February 9
President Bidya Devi Bhandari has certified an amendment to the Bill on Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP).
With the enactment of the amendment, the twin transitional justice bodies’ term has been extended by one year, and one more year if needed. The commissions’ term was expiring on Saturday.
Earlier, both houses of the Federal Parliament had passed the amendment.
The government said that it extended the term of the commissions because they had not completed the works.
Over 62,000 conflict era issues are yet to be brought to a close.
Meanwhile, the new bill states that the terms of the commissions’ chairpersons and members will expire after mid-April. Earlier, their term was fixed till the dissolution of the commissions.
