Nepalis’ dream of seeing the runway of the country’s only international airport expanded to handle more flights at the same time is likely to hit a snag as the government prepares to scrap an agreement signed with a Chinese company.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal says it will cancel the agreement signed with China Shanxi Construction Engineering Group owing to the consultant’s failure to start reconstruction works on time.

The company was assigned to begin construction works by 2017 November. However, it has not begun yet. The Authority had issued a number of requests and warning to the company to resume works earlier, but in vain.

Earlier, an Spanish company had taken the responsibility to expand the runway from 2013 to 2016. But, it completed only 20 per cent works in the period.

Then, the Authority had divided the work into three categories and assigned different contractors.

Besides Shanxi, the progress made by other two contractors is satisfactory, according to the the Authority officials.
