Kathmandu, April 19

Nepali officials have invited their counterparts from Oman and the UAE to discuss a potential labour agreement between Nepal and the two countries.

The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security says delegations from the two countries are expected to land in Kathmandu before the first week of May. Ministry Secretary Mahesh Dahal says negotiations in the following weeks will lead to the signing of agreements between Nepal and the two countries.

The ministry claims that the new agreement with Oman and the UAE will be more ‘progressive’ than the one signed between Nepal and Malaysia recently. “We have raised two issues. First, labourers should not have to spend money to go work and their health should be taken care of,” an official from the ministry said.

Nepal has already signed an MoU on labour with the UAE. However, the deal has been criticised for not being labour-friendly. This will be the first time that a labour agreement is signed with Oman.
