Nepal government allocates Rs 1.4 trillion for post-disaster reconstruction campaign

budget

Kathmandu, May 29

The KP Sharma Oli government has allocated around Rs 1.4 trillion for post-quake reconstruction work for the fiscal 2073-74 BS.

While presenting the budget in the Parliament on Saturday, Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel said the government is ready to allocate more budget for reconstruction work, if need be.

Last year, government had allocated Rs 91 billion — Rs 74 billion through the annual budget and Rs 17 through ministry-wise allocation — for reconstruction work.

Only around seven billion of the sum has been spent so far. Post-disaster reconstruction work has been pretty slow, and the government has drawn flak from several quarters over this.

Minister Poudel told the Parliament that post-quake reconstruction will require Rs 8.13 trillion.

Within the next two years, the government will construct all health and education infrastructure that were damaged in last year’s quakes, Poudel said.

He announced that the government will rebuild all quake-ravaged physical infrastructure within the next five years.
