Nepal 11 positions up in Corruption Perception Index

Kathmandu, January 23

Nepal has improved its position in the annual Corruption Perception Index that Transparency International made public on Thursday.

Nepal has been ranked 113th among 180 countries in the CPI 2019 with a score of 34 out of 100. Though slightly, Nepal has also improved its score; it was 31 in the past two years. Despite the progress, Nepal is still among the highly corrupt countries.

In a statement, the Nepal country office of Transparency International says the score improved due to action taken by anti-corruption bodies regarding the abuse of public office, activities of the judiciary, decisions regarding taxation, and efforts for good governance in security agencies including the Nepal Army. However, the government has failed to implement its commitment against corruption whereas citizens do not have sufficient access to information, according to the organisation.

The organisation says Nepal will remain among corrupt countries unless its long-term problems are solved.
