National Assembly polls on Jan 23, 2020, to elect a third of members

Kathmandu, December 12

The government has decided to hold the National Assembly elections on January 23, 2020, to elect a third of members of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament.

The government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Gokul Baskota announced the date amidst his weekly press briefing in Kathmandu on Thursday. A recent Cabinet meeting made the decision, according to him.

The term of 19 lawmakers from the 59-member House is expiring on March 4, 2020. Whereas 18 will be elected to fill the vacancies, one will be appointed by the president.

The constitution has it that the elections must be held 35 days before the term expires.
