Nepal lose historic opportunity to win volleyball gold medal

For the first time in the country’s sports history, Nepali women’s volleyball team reached the final stage of South Asian Games. However, they could not win the gold medal as the last set of the competitive five-set match did not favour them.

Whereas India led the final women’s volleyball match under the 13th South Asian Games played in Kathmandu on Tuesday by winning the first set, Nepal won the second and third sets. If Nepal had won the fourth set also, that would have ended the match on Nepal’s side, but India won again, making it equal. In the final set, Nepal could not perform well and were restricted to the silver medal.

Nepal wins eight gold medals on Tuesday

Adding on 15 gold medals earned on Monday, Nepal on Tuesday won eight more gold medals during the 13th South Asian Games currently underway in Nepal. So far, Nepal has won 23 gold medals and is on the top of the medal tally. So far Nepal has won 46 medals in total. India is in the second position with 17 gold medals, and 42 medals in total.

Minister warns of padlocking sugar mills

Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Lekh Raj Bhatta, has warned of padlocking sugar mills if they fail to pay outstanding dues to sugarcane farmers. Receiving a delegation of the farmers and concerned local governments at the ministry on Tuesday, the minister said the government was ready to discuss with everyone to address concerns of the industrialists, but they should pay the farmers on time.

During the meeting, the farmers’ representatives said they were deprived of the pay for upto three years.

The government has transferred chief district officers of Bhaktapur, Chitwan, Parsa, Makawanpur and Lamjung districts. Here is the list of new CDOs:

  1. Bhaktapur: Hum Kala Pandey
  2. Chitwan: Narayan Prasad Bhattarai
  3. Parsa: Jitendra Basnet
  4. Makawanpur: Narayan Prasad Bhatta
  5. Lamjung: Dijan Bhattarai

House panel to rewrite civil service bill

As rounds of discussions on the bill on formation and operation of the federal civil service triggered multiple issues to be revised, the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament has decided to rewrite the bill incorporating the suggestions.

The meeting decided to rewrite the entire bill as the discussions could not lead to an agreement among the parties about various contested issues. However, it is not clear who will rewrite the bill: the committee or the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration.

Khem Raj Paudel says he won’t fight any election now

After losing the House of Representatives by-election in Kaski-2, Nepali Congress leader Khem Raj Paudel says he will not contest a poll anymore, instead will motivate the youth of the party. Paudel, who is in his 70s, had got an opportunity to fight a general election for the first time. he had apparently enjoyed so much support from various factions of the party though some leaders of the other parties criticised the decision for fielding the old man.

He was defeated by the ruling Nepal Communist Party’s Bidya Bhattarai by over 8,000 votes.
