Mahara sent to judicial custody until hearing is concluded

The Kathmandu District Court on Monday has decided to send the former House Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara to judicial custody, on the charges of attempt to rape.

A single bench of judge Sudarshan Raj Pandey made the decision on Monday to send Mahara to judicial custody. During the bail trial hearing, four government attorneys demanded a seven-and-a-half-year jail term for Mahara, who has been accused of attempting to rape a Federal Parliament employee. Earlier, a staffer at the Parliament Secretariat had filed an FIR on October 4, accusing Mahara of attempting to rape her on September 29 at her rented apartment in Tinkune, Kathmandu.

Following the court order, Mahara has been taken to Dillibajar Jail.

Alam also facing money laundering charges

The Department of Money Laundering and Investigation has started investigating suspended lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam as it believes he might be involved in money laundering. Alam who has been facing charges of burning over a dozen people in a brick kiln will now also face charges of money laundering also. The department has started its investigation from Monday.

Students claim no agreement between them and Chitwan Medical College

Students of Chitwan Medical College have said that no agreement has been reached between the college and them regarding the adjustment of excess fees. The college, organising a press conference last week, had said it would refund or adjust the excess fee to the students. However, the Medical Education Struggle Committee says that the college had done so to look good in public and added that no agreement had been reached between the college and the committee.

Archaeological artefacts in danger at National Museum

Archaeological artefacts being kept at the National Museum are in danger as the museum does not have proper air conditioning. Most of the historical artefacts which were affected due to the 2015 earthquake are being kept at the National Museum for preservation, however, the museum’s information officer Suwas Dangol says that they are in danger due to poor infrastructure. The museum fears that most artefacts will be damaged due to it.

Nepal not happy about governor appointment

A senior leader of Nepal Communist Party, Madhav Kumar Nepal, has expressed his dissatisfaction over the appointment of the governor for the seven provinces. Nepal had proposed Bishwakanta Mainali, Bedu Ram Bhusal, Amrit Kumar Bohara and Shree Maya Thakali for governors’ posts. But NCP chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli didn’t pick any of them. Expressing his disagreement over the nominations, leader Nepal has reportedly registered a note of dissent.

KC starts 17th hunger strike in Dadeldhura

Medical education reform activist and senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC has started his 17th fast-unto-death in Dadeldhura district from Monday. He started the hunger strike in Tufandada, headquarter of Dadeldhura.

Nepal to stop importing electricity from next year, claims Finance Minister

Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada has said that Nepal will not be importing electricity from next year. Minister Khatiwada said that works were underway to make sure Nepal was self-reliant on electricity.
