Kathmandu, June 20

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel and his ministry’s secretary Krishna Raj BC have expressed contrasting opinions over the purpose of introducing a bill to regulate the use of atomic and radioactive substances.

Whereas minister Pokharel says the substances should be used to ensure national security, secretary BC says they will be used in nonmilitary sectors like agriculture, hospitals and industries.

Likewise, Minister Pokharel views that the private sector should be barred from using such substances. BC is for giving a regulated access to them.

Participating in a discussion on the bill at Education and Health Committee of Parliament on Thursday morning, Pokharel said, “The use of such substances is wide across the globe. The government is aware that how they can be used for national security.”

But, BC said, “Agriculture institutions, hospitals and industries of the private sector need radioactive substances. But, they have been unable to use them as using it has been barred by the law.”
