Mid-Western University’s dean, officially on study leave, grabs a political appointment

Ananta Raj Ghimire

Kathmandu, July 19

The Mid-Wester University Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Ananta Raj Ghimire, has been found to be receiving double benefits from the state as he got a politically appointed government job recently.

Assistant Professor Ghimire was on study leave from the university for a year in effect from January 2021 as he said he was going to Malaysia for a PhD, the university says. However, he has been appointed the managing director of the government-run Vidhyut Utapadan Company Limited. The government’s energy secretary is the chairperson of the company.

Ghimire has also accepted the charge. “It is not that I first got the job and took the leave. I was on leave and study, but the government sought my role,” he tells Onlinekhabar, arguing his act does not amount to any corruption as he is not paid by the university during the period.

But, the university’s Vice-Chancellor Nanda Bahadur Singh says the university will cancel the leave granted to Ghimire as he failed to submit a progress report to the institution in the past six months.

Of late, several irregularities in the university have come to the surface including the involvement of teachers in rigging the exams.
