The government is preparing to upgrade Janakpur Sub-metropolis to metropolis, just a few days ahead of the Election Commission-set date to file nominations for local elections in Province 2.
Minister for Federal Affairs Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar has prepared a proposal to be presented before the Cabinet, and when it is approved, the city will get metropolis status.
Local elections are taking place in Province 2 on September 18. As of now, Birgunj is the only metropolis in the province, which has 136 local governments. An MJF-L leader said the government is making the announcement after consulting local leaders in Janakpur.
The historic city of Janakpur is considered home of the Mithila culture. According to Hindu Mythology, it was in Janakpur that Lord Ram and Sita tied the knot.
