Janakpurdham, September 25
A protest has been held in Janakpurdham against the campaign to clear land encroached upon Guthi trust property. The Guthikutti Ghar-Jagga Management Struggle Committee staged demonstrations in various parts of Janakpurdham.
The committee submitted memoranda to the Guthi Sansthan (Guthi Corporation), Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City, and the District Administration Office.
Committee chairperson Santosh Sah said they had submitted memoranda to the government multiple times in the past, but since the government had not addressed their demands, they had taken to protest.
He said 30,000 to 35,000 people have built homes and lived for generations on Guthi and “kutti” land in Janakpurdham. He argued that the government, without preparing accurate data of its own, has labelled them encroachers and moved to demolish their homes, which is why they have taken up the protest.
He said their demand is for the government to properly assess the land occupied by these residents, provide compensation, and convert it into regular registered (raithane numbari) land in their names.
Chairperson Sah warned that if the government fails to address their demands and proceeds with efforts to clear the “encroached” land, they will launch a larger movement.
