Locals obstruct Kailali road demanding probe into accident

Locals obstruct the Lamki section of East-West Highway, in Kailali district, on Monday, February 3, 2020.

Kailali, February 3

The Lamki road section of East-West Highway in Lamkichuha municipality-6 of Kailali district in far-western Nepal has been blocked on Monday after locals staged a demonstration.

The locals of the town have been protesting since Saturday after a 22-year-old man, Maya Ram Chaudhary, died after a road accident. Locals have suspected that Chaudhary, who was riding a motorbike, was hit by a vehicle. Therefore, they have demanded that the incident be investigated and needful action taken against the culprit.

During the protest on Sunday, nine locals sustained injuries as the police used force to resume the traffic movement. The protestors, local political leaders and government officials held a meeting on Sunday evening to find a solution to the problem, but in vain.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested an ambulance driver for his alleged involvement in the incident. DSP Daksha Basnet, the spokesperson at the District Police Office, says further investigation is underway.
