The Lalitpur Metropolitan City is preparing to install a solar light system along major roads of the city within the next year.

The city government has recently signed an agreement with a joint venture of Nepali and Indian companies. The joint venture has agreed to complete the project for Rs 52 million within the next six months.

The metropolitan city’s spokesperson Raju Maharjan says the project will make the nighttime movement of general people easy and safe. He adds the smart system is scientific and cost-effective. While consuming less amount of electricity, it will provide more light.

In the new system, the lights will be switched off and on automatically as per the set schedule. The system will be controlled by the Nepal Electricity Authority.

Such systems are operational in developed countries like China, Japan, and Denmark among other countries, according to sources.

In the first phase, the city government will install such lights among Pulchok-Gwarko, Kupandol-Patan Dhoka-Mangalbazaar, Lagankhel-Dhapakhel, Jawalakhel-Bungmati, and Bagmati-Lagankhel routes.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu and Bharatpur metropolitan cities have also expressed interest in installing the new system.
