4 killed as Lalitpur house catches fire during Mha Puja celebration

Kathmandu, November 6

Four persons have died in a fire incident in Mangalbajar, Patan of Lalitpur on Friday evening.

AIG Hari Bahadur Pal, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Office in Ranipokhari, says the four members of a family died after their house caught fire during the family’s Mha Puja celebration at around 7 pm yesterday.

The victims have been identified as Laxmi Krishna Tamrakar, his daughter Anjana, his daughter-in-law Ranjana and grandson Nirjal.

Five persons of the family have been rescued by the police and the locals. Two of them are undergoing treatment at the Patan Hospital.

SSP Kiran Bajracharya, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Range in Lalitpur, says a traditional diyo lit for the celebration ignited the fire and it spread further as a cooking gas cylinder exploded.

“Some might have died of asphyxiation,” she says, “But, further investigation is underway.”
