The Election Commission on Friday has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to keep an eye on the forces which are likely to carry out various activities against the third phase of local elections in Province 2 scheduled to be held exactly after one month.

It says police need to arrest people who could carry out any activity in a bid to foil the elections and take action against them as per the Some Public Offence and Punishment Act, 1970.

The constitutional body has told the government to manage security personnel and provisions as per the necessity and arrest people possessing, wielding and using weapons except according to the law. It has also urged those keeping arms by acquiring licence also to submit the weapons to the local administration till the elections are held.

Meanwhile, the Commission also directed the government to shut down all schools of eight districts of Province 2 for one week till the voting day as many school premises will be used as voting centres.

It has decided to mend compound walls of schools to be used as voting centres if they are broken.

The Commission has issued a 17-point directive to the government today after a meeting of election commissioners.
