Kathmandu, June 27
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City on Tuesday launched a biomethanation plant that will convert three tonnes of waste into 14 kilowatt electricity everyday.
KMC Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya and European Union’s Ambassador to Nepal Rensje Teerink jointly inaugurated the plant in Teku of Kathmandu today.
The EU has contributed 80 per cost to the project.
The plant will also produce 3oo kg compost, 96 kg biogas and 500 litre processed water everyday.

Mayor Shakya says the plant was installed to make Kathmandu’s waste management sustainable, hoping the city denizens’ dream of seeing Kathmandu green and clean will come true soon.
Introduction of the plant will result in decrease in carbon dioxide emission by 2,500 tonnes annually, according to the KMC.
The KMC was experimenting the technology for last three years.
