Kathmandu banks back to operation after ministry tells police not to stop them

Kathmandu, August 21

Banks in Kathmandu have opened their selected branches on Friday despite a prohibitory order in operation since Thursday.

The banks were closed on Thursday after traffic police reportedly barred the bank staff from going to their office citing the prohibitory order. Claiming the government officials had already agreed to let the bank staff travel on the basis of their identity cards, Nepal Bankers’ Association had called a strike on Thursday.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs again issued a circular to the authorities directing them not to bar bank staff from movement, and the association agreed to open the banks.

Only up to four branches of a bank have come into operation today, according to the association.
