Kalanki underpass to come into operation by June 2018

Construction works are underway at Kalanki underpass.

Kathmandu, November 1

The government aims to bring under-construction underpass, the first of its kind in Nepal, in Kalanki of Kathmandu into operation by June 2018.

Chief of the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project, Gyanendra Jha, says so far 40 per cent construction works have been over. China’s Shanghai Construction is taking the assignment.

The Chinese government has extended financial support to the project.

The underpass will be 800-metre long. Works on Balkhu side have almost been over and workers now are focused on Sitapaila side, according to Jhapa.

Though the Chinese company has accelerated works in past 20 days, the company needs to recruit more personnel to complete the task on time, according to Jhapa.

The underpass will facilitate the direct movement of vehicles plying the Ring Road under Kalimati-Thankot road.

The government hopes that the construction of underpass will end hours-long traffic congestion at the prime entry point of Kathmandu Valley.
