Four Nepali films were released in quick succession around Dashain, each trying to outdo the others. Their confidence faded when ticket sales fell short of expectations. All four were sequels to films whose first instalments had been big hits.
The lineup included “Aa Bata Aama 2”, “Chha Maya Chhapakkai 2”, “12 Gaun 2” and “Kabaddi”. “Kabaddi” was the fifth instalment in its series, while the other three were second parts of their franchises.
The numbers for these films have not been encouraging. “Kabaddi”, which reached theatres within a few days of the others, showed promising signs early on. Having secured comparatively more shows, “Kabaddi: After the Final Match” has now pulled ahead of the rest by earning Rs 10 crore in 10 days.
According to the box office report released by the Film Development Board, “Kabaddi” has so far earned Rs 107,673,715 (about Rs 10.76 crore). It has sold more than 346,000 tickets.
Interestingly, “Kabaddi”, which stars Dayahang Rai in the lead role, is closely followed by another Dayahang film, “Pension Patta”. That film has earned more than Rs 10.28 crore.
Next on the list is “Aa Bata Aama 2”, with earnings of more than Rs 6.24 crore so far. “Ba Ek Yoddha” has collected more than Rs 3.54 crore, followed by “Chha Maya Chhapakkai 2” with Rs 3.34 crore.
At the bottom of the list is “12 Gaun 2”, which has earned more than Rs 2.29 crore.
Among the films released so far, “Gaunthali” remains at the top, with earnings of more than Rs 26.07 crore.
