A meeting of the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee

Kathmandu, December 30

After sugarcane farmers from various districts of Terai came to Kathmandu demanding that sugar mills pay them all outstanding dues at the earliest, a committee in House of Representatives has also urged the government to make sure that they receive the payment as soon as possible.

A meeting of the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee on Monday directed the government to make efforts for the payment. It also urged the government to take action against the mills if they fail to pay.

The committee had invited representatives of the protesting farmers also to the meeting today.

Speaking at the meeting, Agriculture Minister Ghana Shyam Bhusal informed that two sugarcane farmers ran away after the farmers’ protest. One of them, Birendra Kanaudiya, is a Provincial Assembly member representing the main opposition Nepali Congress.

Commerce Secretary Baikuntha Aryal said his minister wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs to search them.
